How Fabric Data Is Verified

Last updated:

Every product listing on NatuClothes is backed by a structured verification process. Fabric composition data is not aggregated from user submissions or unverified sources. Instead, each data point passes through a multi-step pipeline designed to ensure accuracy before it appears on any product page.

Data Collection

Fabric composition percentages are sourced from three primary channels:

  • Manufacturer labels — the legally required fiber content labels attached to finished garments, as mandated by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission Textile Fiber Products Identification Act (16 CFR Part 303).
  • Official product pages — brand-published product descriptions, spec sheets, and technical documentation available on manufacturer websites.
  • Direct brand inquiries — when label data and published specs are incomplete or ambiguous, direct outreach to brand representatives is used to clarify composition details.

For each product, the following data points are recorded:

  • Fiber content by percentage (e.g., 97% cotton, 3% elastane)
  • Fabric weight in grams per square meter (GSM), where available
  • Weave or knit type (e.g., twill, jersey, percale)
  • Country of origin, as stated on the product label

Verification Process

Raw data passes through a four-step verification pipeline before publication:

Step 1: Primary Data Collection

Composition data is gathered from official brand sources. Only manufacturer-published information is used as the initial data input. Retailer-provided descriptions are treated as secondary references and are not used as standalone sources.

Step 2: Third-Party Cross-Reference

Where available, composition data is cross-referenced with third-party lab reports and independent textile testing results. Testing methodologies referenced include ASTM D629 (Standard Test Methods for Quantitative Analysis of Textiles) and AATCC test methods for fiber identification. Lab reports are not available for every product; when they are, they take precedence over label data in cases of discrepancy.

Step 3: Peer-Reviewed Research Consultation

Performance-related claims — such as breathability, moisture management, and durability — are not stated without supporting evidence. When product listings reference functional fabric properties, those claims are validated against peer-reviewed textile research and published test standards. No performance claim appears on the site without a cited source or recognized testing standard.

Step 4: Internal Review

The FabricData Research Team conducts a final review of all data before publication. This review checks for internal consistency (e.g., fiber percentages summing to 100%), formatting accuracy, and alignment with the scoring criteria described below.

Composition Scoring

NatuClothes uses a threshold-based scoring system to determine which products appear on a given listing page. The scoring methodology applies consistently across all product categories and material types.

Target Material % Badge Listing Status
100% Full verification badge Listed — product contains only the target material with no secondary fibers
90 – 99% Partial verification badge Listed — product is predominantly the target material with a small percentage of secondary fibers
Below 90% No badge Excluded — product does not meet the minimum threshold for the target material and does not appear on the listing page

The 90% threshold was selected based on textile industry conventions for material classification. Products at or above 90% target material content are functionally representative of that material's properties, while products below that threshold exhibit blended-fabric characteristics that differ meaningfully from single-material garments.

Scoring is applied programmatically at build time using the composition percentages stored in the product database. No manual overrides or editorial adjustments are made to individual product scores.

Content Standards

All content published on NatuClothes adheres to the following editorial standards:

  • Evidence-based claims only. Performance claims (breathability, durability, moisture-wicking) cite specific studies, test standards, or manufacturer specifications. Unsubstantiated claims are not published.
  • No health or medical claims. Fabric composition data is presented as material information only. No statements are made about health effects, medical conditions, or therapeutic properties of any fiber or fabric. This is consistent with YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) content guidelines.
  • Editorial independence from affiliate relationships. Products that generate affiliate revenue receive the same scoring treatment as products without affiliate links. Affiliate relationships do not influence which products appear on a listing page, their badge status, or their position within a listing. Full details are available on the affiliate disclosure page.
  • Factual, data-first tone. Content presents composition data and verified fabric properties without subjective recommendations or personal opinions.

Update Cadence

Product data accuracy degrades over time as manufacturers update formulations, discontinue products, or revise specifications. To maintain data integrity, NatuClothes follows a structured update cycle:

  • 90-day rolling verification. Every product entry is re-verified against current manufacturer data on a rolling 90-day cycle. Products that can no longer be verified are flagged and removed from active listings.
  • Research-triggered updates. Articles and comparison pages are updated when new peer-reviewed textile research is published that affects the accuracy of existing content.
  • Visible last-verified dates. All product listing pages display a last-verified date so visitors can assess data recency. Each product entry in the database includes an individual verification timestamp.
